Statistics

~Over 70% of all rapes go unreported.

~1 in 6 men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime.

~1 in 4 women will be sexually assaulted by the time they graduate college.  

~The United States has the highest rate of rape of any country that publishes such
statistics; 13 times higher than Great Britain and 20 times higher than Japan.

~In 2000, there were 261,000 victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault.
Of these 261,000, 114,000 were victims of sexual assault, 55,000 were    
victims of attempted rape, and 92,000 were victims of completed rape.

~Approximately 62% of female rape victims knew their assailant.

~Approximately 43% of victims are raped by a friend or acquaintance; 34% by a
stranger; 17% by an intimate; and 2% by another relative.

~61% of rape victims were sexually assaulted before the age of 18.

~21.6% of women who reported being raped during their lifetime were under age
12 at the time of their first rape. 32.4% of these women were 12-17 years of age.
Therefore, over half of all female rape victim/survivors surveyed in this study were
under the age of 18 at the time of their first rape.

~Age 12-34 are the highest risk years. Risk peaks in the late teens: girls 16 to 19
are four times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape,
attempted rape or sexual assault

In SC...

~Currently, SC ranks 8th in the nation for the number of women murdered by men.
 (SCCADVASA, 2009)

~Greenwood County: ranked 12th in the state of SC for rape & sexual assault

~The majority (60.9%) of women who were reported as victims of forcible sex
offenses were white. (SCDPS, 2001)

~The highest forcible sex offense victimization rate was experienced among women
between and including the ages of 13 and 17, with a victimization rate of 80.6 per
10,000. (SCDPS, 2001)

~42.8% of sexual assaults were committed by an acquaintance. (SCDPS, 2001)

~Forcible sex offenses occurred most frequently on Saturday, which accounted for
16.9% of cases. Sunday had the least number of forcible sex offenses reported,
accounting for 13.5% of all cases. (SCDPS, 2001)

~The majority of forcible sex offenses occurred in the late evening or early
morning hours, from 8:00 PM to 6:59 AM.(SCDPS, 2001)
